Ask an experienced overlander how they plan a trip and the answer is rarely "I just started driving." A good route is built in layers — legal land access, water and fuel sources, terrain difficulty, weather windows, and a plan for what happens if something goes wrong. Skip that layering and a fun weekend can turn into a long, expensive tow bill.
The good news: you don't need years of experience to plan a solid route. You need the right sources, the right tools, and a habit of asking "what's my bailout if this goes sideways?" before you ever air down.

Start With Land Ownership
The single most common mistake new overlanders make is picking a trail off social media without checking who actually owns the land it crosses. Public land in the U.S. is a patchwork of agencies, and each one has different rules:
- BLM (Bureau of Land Management) — Generally the most open to dispersed camping and OHV travel, but individual Field Offices can post seasonal or route-specific closures
- U.S. Forest Service — Motor Vehicle Use Maps (MVUMs) show exactly which roads are legally open — driving off a designated route is a citable offense on most National Forest land
- State Trust Land — Often requires a separate recreational permit even though it looks identical to BLM land next to it
- National Parks & Monuments — Usually paved-road-only for standard vehicles, with backcountry travel requiring a specific permit
- Private land — More overland routes cross private inholdings than people realize. A public easement doesn't always mean the land on either side of the road is public too
Land status and closures change seasonally — wildlife closures, fire restrictions, and washouts all shift year to year. Always confirm current status with the managing agency (BLM Field Office, Forest District, etc.) within a week or two of your trip, not from an old blog post or forum thread.
Choosing a Route That Matches Your Rig and Skill
Once you know where you're legally allowed to be, match the route to your actual vehicle and experience level — not the vehicle you wish you had.
A Practical Example
Say you're planning a two-day loop through BLM land with a mildly lifted 4Runner, traveling solo. A route with a few miles of rocky shelf road is reasonable; a route that requires a locked front diff and 35s to clear a wash is not — even if it looked fine in someone else's trip video.
Building the Route Itself
With land status and difficulty settled, it's time to actually draw the route. Most overlanders layer a few different tools together rather than relying on just one:
- Topographic reference — Government MVUMs, Forest Service topo maps, or a service like Gaia GPS/OnX to see terrain, elevation change, and official road numbers
- Community trip reports — Forums, Facebook groups, and recent trail condition posts fill in real-world detail maps can't: is that wash currently passable, is there active logging traffic, etc.

Once your route is plotted, export it as a GPX file — a standard format almost every GPS unit and phone navigation app can import. This gives you an offline, battery-independent copy of your route that doesn't depend on cell signal.
Always download offline map tiles for your route area before you leave cell coverage. Even with a GPX track loaded, having the underlying topo or satellite imagery cached locally makes it far easier to orient yourself if you get off-track.
Mark Your Fuel, Water, and Bailout Points
A route isn't just the trail itself — it's every resource and exit along the way. Before you go, mark on your map:
- Fuel range — Know your vehicle's real-world range at trail speeds (lower than highway mpg) and mark the last reliable gas station before you commit
- Water sources — Note any reliable water along the route, and never count on a seasonal source actually having water when you arrive
- Bailout points — Every route should have marked points where you could cut the trip short and get back to pavement if weather, mechanical issues, or fatigue force a change of plans
- Cell signal pockets — Ridgelines and high points often have brief signal even in otherwise dead zones — worth noting for emergency check-ins

These margins assume you're carrying reserve fuel and water as backup, not counting on gauges reading perfectly accurate at the end of a long trail day.
Weather, Season, and Timing
The same route can be a fun Saturday drive in October and a genuinely dangerous mistake in July or after a monsoon storm. Before locking in a date, check:
- Seasonal closures — Many high-elevation routes close for snow well into early summer; many desert routes get punishing by midday in summer heat
- Flash flood risk — Washes and canyon routes can flood fast from storms miles away — check the regional forecast, not just the trailhead forecast
- Fire restrictions — Stage 1 and Stage 2 fire restrictions affect campfires, and in extreme cases can close entire forests to entry
Tell Someone Your Plan
This is the step every guide mentions and almost everyone skips at least once. Before you leave cell coverage, share your actual route — not just "heading to the mountains" — with someone who isn't coming.
- Share the route — Export your GPX or share your Route Planner link with a trusted contact
- Give a return window — Not just "back Sunday," but "if you haven't heard from me by Sunday 6pm, start making calls"
- Note your check-in method — Satellite messenger, ham/GMRS radio schedule, or specific ridgeline where you expect signal
If your route goes beyond reliable cell coverage — which most real overland routes do — a satellite communicator with SOS capability is worth the investment. It's the difference between a bad situation and an unrecoverable one.
